BEST WISHES FROM YOUR ATA FOR A HEALTHY NEW YEAR!!!

TOPICAL TIME
The Nov-Dec issue was mailed yesterday. Allowing for the nine business days in which the USPS expects delivery, US members can expect to receive their copy by Jan. 17. This information is regularly posted on our website. Your copy will be encased in plastic rather than a paper cover--saving both trees and dollars.  Wayne Youngblood is working hard playing major catch-up with the Jan-Feb issue.  We thank all our members for their patience.

This issue of Topical Time was mailed to 41 more ATA members than the previous issue!  ATA is making progress on its membership goals; thanks to all who are promoting Topical Time and ATA membership.

The Nov-Dec issue includes interesting lead articles by two of our UK members (Barry Floyd and Jeff Dugdale) on "African Art on Stamps" and "Life in the Colonial Bush." And there is a prepublication offer you won't want to miss for ATA's upcoming book, Handbook of Disney on Stamps. Watch for your copy soon!

June 22-24, 2012
Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center, 2300 Lincoln Highway East Lancaster  PA  17602

Designed to draw attention to the wonders of the United States, this international rate stamp shows the glories of Lancaster CountyPennsylvania, with one of its beautiful, iconic farmsteads set amid gently rolling hills.
Known for its breathtaking rural scenery, agricultural bounty, and small towns with evocative names like Bird-in-Hand and Paradise, Lancaster County is perhaps most famous as part of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The Amish, with their horse-drawn buggies, one-room schoolhouses, and traditional lifestyle, give the county a traditional, Old World charm. Their pristine family farms, surrounded by neatly cultivated fields, offer visitors a glimpse of another century and a quieter way of life.

Steve Jobs
"Steven Paul "SteveJobs (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011)[5][6][7] was an American computer entrepreneur and inventor. He was co-founder,[8] chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc.[9][10] Jobs also previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney. He was credited in Toy Story (1995) as an executive producer.[11]

In the late 1970s, Jobs, with Apple co-founder Steve WozniakMike Markkula[8] and others designed, developed, and marketed one of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers, the Apple II series. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of Xerox PARC's mouse-driven graphical user interface, which led to the creation of the Macintosh.[12][13] After losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985,[14][15] Jobs resigned from Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher-education and business markets. Apple's subsequent 1996 buyout of NeXT brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and he served as its CEO from 1997 until 2011.
In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd which was spun off asPixar Animation Studios.[16] He remained CEO and majority shareholder at 50.1 percent until its acquisition by The Walt Disney company in 2006.[17] Consequently Jobs became Disney's largest individual shareholder at 7 percent and a member of Disney's Board of Directors.[18][19] On August 24, 2011, Jobs announced his resignation from his role as Apple's CEO.
On October 5, 2011, Apple announced that Jobs had died at age 56 due to pancreatic cancer.[20][21][22][23]"

Syria, Germany, Armenia...
"Jobs was born in San Francisco[1] and was adopted by the Armenian family of Paul and Clara Jobs (née Hagopian)[24] of Mountain View, California.[5] Paul and Clara later adopted a daughter, Patti. Jobs' biological parents – Abdulfattah John Jandali, a Syrian Muslim immigrant to the U.S from Homs,[25][26] who later became a political science professor,[27] and Joanne Schieble (later Simpson), an American graduate student[28] of German ancestry[29] who went on to become a speech language pathologist[30] – eventually married. The marriage produced Jobs' biological sister, novelist Mona Simpson.[31] Jandali claims that he didn't want to put Jobs up for adoption but that Simpson's parents did not approve of her marrying a Syrian. Jandali was estranged from Jobs and never contacted him."

"Jobs always aspired to position Apple and its products at the forefront of the information technology industry by foreseeing and setting trends, at least in innovation and style. He summed up that self-concept at the end of his keynote speech at the Macworld Conference and Expo in January 2007 by quoting ice hockey legendWayne Gretzky:[77]

There's an old Wayne Gretzky quote that I love. 'I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.' And we've always tried to do that at Apple. Since the very very beginning. And we always will.
—Steve Jobs"
"Jobs was also a fan of The Beatles. He referred to them on multiple occasions at Keynotes and also was interviewed on a showing of a Paul McCartney concert. When asked about his business model on 60 Minutes, he replied:[88]

My model for business is The Beatles: They were four guys that kept each other's negative tendencies in check; they balanced each other. And the total was greater than the sum of the parts. Great things in business are not done by one person, they are done by a team of people."

I love the work of WWF - World Wide Fund for Nature, and of GROTH AG! "Groth AG is the sole licensee of WWF International, Gland. Only with the agreement of WWF International and Groth AG, can stamps be issued with the WWF Panda Logo." I give you the link to the WWF Stamp Shop - Groth AG, from which you can buy stamps, FDC, maximum cards [don't buy too many maxicards - leave some for me! :) ] Tell Anita and Hans Groth that I referred you - MAYBE you'll get a 10% discount or so :) . "The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international non-governmental organizationworking on issues regarding the conservationresearch and restoration of the environment, formerly named the World Wildlife Fund, which remains its official name in Canada and theUnited States. It is the world's largest independent conservation organization with over 5 million supporters worldwide, working in more than 100 countries, supporting around 1,300[4]conservation and environmental projects. The group says its mission is "to halt and reverse the destruction of our environment".[7]Currently, much of its work focuses on the conservation of three biomes that contain most of the world's biodiversityforestsfreshwater ecosystems, and oceans and coasts. 25th Anniversary WWF Stamp Collection
GROTH AG UPDATE

Article in Newsletter "The Nature of Business" WWF International January 2007
When Hans Groth, CEO of Groth AG, signed the contract with WWF in 1982, he was confident the WWF Stamp Collection would be a long-term product that would last for at least 10 years!
Today, Hans is proud to say that the collection - the largest thematic collection in the world - is still selling well and that his company will soon be celebrating a quarter of a century of collaboration with WWF. It is projected that the Collection will continue to be produced at least until 2011 when WWF will celebrate its 50th Anniversary.

To date over one billion stamps and almost 400 issues have been printed and sold, generating more than 20 million Swiss francs in royalties - an important source of funding for WWF's conservation activities.
Groth AG was established by Hans Groth in 1965. lt is a family-owned business of which Hans is the CEO and his son Daniel a member of the Board of Directors. Hans' wife Anita is responsible for production of the WWF Stamp Collection. Their offices are in Unteraegeri (Zug, Switzerland), a charming town in the foothills of the Swiss Alps.

At its 1998 Annual Conference in Interlaken (Switzerland), WWF awarded Hans Groth the Gold Panda Award - the organization's highest environmental prize - in recognition of his dedication to the cause of the environment.

Hans and Anita have expressed their pleasure at working with WWF, saying: "We wish to thank the team at WWF International for their confidence which has allowed us to produce this beautiful collection over the past 25 years."

"Dorincard: Blogger Dorin C is a stamp and postcard fanatic, and luckily he's more than pleased to write prolifically and charmingly about his obsession. He has a particular bent for stamps with wild mammals on them, but his blog demonstrates an affinity for stamps of all forms and backgrounds, as long as they offer a special narrative that's worth sharing with his readers.
