BBC News - British Darth Vader fighter dies aged 89

"Robert James Gilbert Anderson (15 September 1922 – 1 January 2012) was an English Olympic fencer, and a renowned film fight choreographer, with a cinema career that spanned more than 50 years and included films such as HighlanderThe Princess BrideThe Lord of the Rings film trilogy and Die Another Day. He was regarded as the premier master of Hollywood sword-fighting[1], and during his career he coached many actors in swordsmanship, including Errol FlynnSean ConneryAntonio Banderas and Johnny Depp. He also appeared a stunt double for Darth Vader's light-saber battles in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Backand Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi."

"Darth Vader (born Anakin Skywalker) is the central character in the Star Wars saga,[1][2][3]appearing as one of the main antagonists in the original trilogy and as the main protagonist in the prequel trilogy.
The character was created by George Lucas and numerous actors have portrayed him. His appearances span all six Star Wars films, and he is an important character in the expanded universe of television series, video games, novels, literature and comic books. The films establish that there was originally a Jedi Knight named Anakin who fell to the dark side of theForce;[4] he is also revealed to be the father of both Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa, the two main protagonists of the original trilogy. Vader is ultimately redeemed in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, when he sacrifices himself to save his son, Luke.
He is one of only four characters to appear in all six Star Wars films, along with Obi-Wan KenobiR2-D2 and C-3PO.
Vader's name has become used as a synonym for a powerful form of evil, in both televisual pop culture and political discourse."

Ralph McQuarrie, the designer of Darth Vader, visiting ILM in 2008

Brian Muir sculpted Darth Vader's costume using Ralph McQuarrie's design.[5]

Darth Vader design being shown in a Star Wars exhibit. Lucas' vision of Darth Vader's design is to have a cape that fluttered in the wind and a wide-brimmed helmet similar to the headgear of a medieval samurai. The costumiers, Bermans Nathans and John Mollo, who completed the character with elements from four separate departments: a monk's cloak from the ecclesiastical division, a World War II German helmet and gas mask from the military department, a leather undersuit from the motorcycle department, and a metal breastplate from the medievalsection.[6]

Postal workers! Look how you should postmark, for philatelists, even non-mailable (yet) items, such as this "philatelic souvenir, as I declare it" that's neither an envelope, nor a postcard. My outrageous "non-traditional" DORINCARD / MAXICARD with the "Recycle More" stamp from the USA "Go Green" series; a magazine page ad - "TAIWAN cuts carbon emmissions by Turning Trash into Green Gold"; and a pictorial First Day of Issue postmark from USPS

"ABBA was a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1970, comprising Anni-Frid Lyngstad,Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Agnetha Fältskog. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of pop music, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982. ABBA has sold over 370 million records worldwide,[1][2] which makes them the fourth best-selling music artists in the history of recorded music, behind only The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. They still sell between two to three million albums a year.[3]ABBA was the first pop group to come from a non-English-speaking country that enjoyed consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the UK, Ireland, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New  Zealand, South Africa and the Philippines. The group also enjoyed significant success in Latin American markets (particularly Mexico, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Argentina), and recorded a collection of their hit songs in Spanish.
During the band's active years, Fältskog and Ulvaeus were a married couple, as were Lyngstad and Andersson–although both couples later divorced. At the height of their popularity, both relationships were suffering strain which ultimately resulted in the collapse of the Ulvaeus-Fältskog marriage in 1979 and the Andersson-Lyngstad marriage in 1981. As a result, these relationship changes began appearing in the group's music, as they produced more introspective lyrics with different compositions.
After ABBA broke up in early 1983, Andersson and Ulvaeus achieved success writing music for the stage while Lyngstad and Fältskog pursued individual solo careers with varying success. ABBA's music declined in popularity until several films, notably Muriel's Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, revived interest in the group, spawning several tribute bands. In 1999, ABBA's music was adapted into the successful musical Mamma Mia!that toured worldwide. A film of the same name released in 2008 became the highest-grossing film in the United Kingdom that year. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 15 March 2010.[4]"

"Dorincard: Blogger Dorin C is a stamp and postcard fanatic, and luckily he's more than pleased to write prolifically and charmingly about his obsession. He has a particular bent for stamps with wild mammals on them, but his blog demonstrates an affinity for stamps of all forms and backgrounds, as long as they offer a special narrative that's worth sharing with his readers.
