Between May and September 1488, Stephen III of Moldavia (known as "Stephen the Great", in Romanian Ștefan cel Mare) built the Voroneț Monastery (in Romanian Mănăstirea Voroneț) to commemorate the victory at Battle of Vaslui. Often known as the "Sistine Chapel of the East", the frescoes at Voroneț feature an intense shade of blue known in Romania as "Voroneț blue". "The exterior walls — including a representation of the Last Judgment on the west wall — were painted in 1547 with a background of vivid cerulean blue. This blue is so vibrant that art historians refer to Voroneț blue the same way they do Titian red.""

"The katholikon (main church) of Saint George at Voroneț Monastery is possibly the most famous church in Romania. It is known throughout the world for its exterior frescoes of bright and intense colours, and for the hundreds of well-preserved figures placed against the renowned azurite background. The age of the monastic site is not known. A legend tells us that Stephen the Great, in a moment of crisis during a war against the Ottoman Turks, came to Daniel the Hermit at his skete in Voroneț and asked for advice. After he won the battle against the Turks, keeping his promise to the monk, the Prince built a new church, dedicated to Saint George, the "bringer of victory in battle". The commemorative inscription placed above the original entrance of the Church of Saint George, now in the exonarthex, shows that the church was built in 1488 in less than four months. It was built on a triconchplan (with three apses), with a chancel, a naos with its tower, and a pronaos. In 1547, the Metropolitan Bishop of Moldavia, Grigorie Roșca, added the exonarthex to the west end of the church."

Eulogy for Daniel Jezek

Delivered at services on October 22, 2010 by long-time family friend Larry Hawthorne

We honor the life of Daniel Jezek, who departed this earth September 24, 2010. A life cut tragically short; a potential with so much more to be realized. We mourn the loss of a loving son, a young man who even in his short time with us, gave much and had so much more to give.

Dan’s book of his life had too few pages, 33 to be exact. But those pages were filled with love, compassion, giving, and a lot of accomplishment.

Daniel was born June 25, 1977, in Prague, in what was then Communist Czechoslovakia. He was the only child and son of two very accomplished parents. His father, who still teaches at Charles University in Prague is a world-famous mathematician, who by the age of 25 had already solved a centuries-old mathematical hypotheses that no one else could solve. That’s a little like already knowing the answer empirically, but not knowing how to get there mathematically.

Dan’s father did it when no one else could. His mother held a PhD in law from Charles University in Prague and was an intellectual figure in her own right. (I might add that his father is very ill right now and we wish him well.)

With that parentage was it any wonder then that Dan was absolutely brilliant? And he demonstrated that mental acuity early.

At the age of three he was introduced to LEGO. LEGO bricks are those little plastic bricks that children – and plenty of grownups – use to build practically everything, limited only by their own imagination. If you were trying to find a world-wide movement, certainly love of all things LEGO would be among them. As an infant Dan began piecing together LEGO works of art.

Brief escapes from behind the Iron Curtain while Dan was growing up were made possible by his father’s visiting professorships at universities in the West. Summer teaching assignments in West Germany, Canada, Berkeley in California, Vanderbilt in Nashville, the University of South Carolina, and, of course, the University of Hawaii.

On one of those summer escapes, the family bought a computer. One of the very first personal computers ever made. It was a leading edge with a clunky keyboard and a monochrome monitor. Few had ever even seen one behind the Iron Curtain.

It was manna from heaven for Dan. Playing with his father’s primitive computer at the age of nine, he finally found something he loved as much as his LEGO. It wasn’t long before he learned to program that computer and to build, quite naturally, a computer game.

Thus was this meld of an inquisitive mind, with a love for LEGO who was literally a virtuoso with a computer in his hands."

Probably this will never happen again: an unknown, generous postal associate gifted me a philatelic souvenir!!! A USPS postcard from 1990: "Splash into an ocean of fun: collect stamps. October is National Stamp Collecting Month." Well, to me it's year-round...:)"

This is the back of the postcard, with the cool pictorial postmark from 1990, and all 4 stamps from the Marine Mammmals series of 1990.
The fact that I received this item 2 years ago, in my return envelope from the Monterey, California 93940 Post Office, where I have sent my items to get their 2009 pictorial postmark for the Kelp Forest stamps, tells me that it was not a mistake from a postal associate. The 1990 postmark was not available in 2009, so the inclusion of this very nice philatelic souvenir in my envelope has to be an intentional gift.

This is my custom maximum card, VERY non-traditional (but hey!...:)...) because I wanted a postcard related to the stamp. So I printed that text, I cut the relevant paragraph, and I affixed the stamp, postmarking it with my own Mailer's Postmark Permit canceller. Sterling, VA is the place from where my tribute to him originated, as far as postmarking is concerned. 

This is a peelable postcard backing, which I affixed onto the custom postcard above.

Etymology and naming

The two Color phases were once thought to represent two distinct species; the grey one called jaguarundi /ˌʒæɡwəˈrʌndi/ zhag-wə-run-dee,^[4] and the red one called eyra. In some Spanish speaking countries, the jaguarundi is also called leoncillo, which means little lion. It has short legs, an elongated body and a long tail, giving it an appearance somewhat like an otter or marten. For this reason, these animals are sometimes referred to as "otter cats." The coat can be either blackish to brownish grey (grey phase) or foxy red to chestnut (red phase); individuals of both phases can be born in the same litter."

"A Heart(y) Scare !!!

[Clytie says] My heart full of thanks goes out to everyone who has had me in their thoughts and prayers this past few days and weeks.

As you know, for the past couple of weeks I have not been feeling well ... I had a horrible burning pain between my shoulder blades and into my chest, and was diagnosed with acid reflux. It was a pain that was deep and burning, and came on mostly while I was walking or exercising. I changed my diet, and seemed to be getting better ...

This past Saturday, about an hour after I woke up, I had another "episode" of extreme debilitating pain - and it would not let up. The pain spread to my left arm and underneath my jaw. I knew it was time to go to the Emergency Room.

To make a long story short, I did NOT have acid reflux --

I had a significant blockage in two of the vessels of my heart.

Yesterday I had an angiogram, and a stent was inserted into the blocked area - a very successful procedure!!!

I am back home now, a little ragged around the edges, with a bunch of new medications to take.

It has been a very humbling and learning experience.

There were scary moments and times that made me laugh til I nearly split my stitches.

I urge each person who reads this to take a second look at your HEART life ... your health decisions ... those little things that may or may not "mean something" to your health ... don't overlook anything! Because if something seems wrong ... it's worth checking out. Please.

Because I love all of YOU - my heart seeking friends and family!

And I want you all to be HEART HEALTHY!

Again ... thank you all for your healing thoughts and prayers. You mean so much to me!!!"
