"Collecting
Stamp collecting is not the same as philately, which is the study of stamps. A philatelist may, but does not have to, collect stamps. Many casual stamp collectors accumulate stamps for sheer enjoyment and relaxation without worrying about the tiny details. The creation of a large or comprehensive collection, however, may require some philatelic knowledge.
Postage stamps are often collected for their historical value and geographical aspects and they are also collected for the many different subjects that have been depicted on them, ranging from ships, horses, birds, Kings, Queens and Presidents.[2]
Stamp collectors are an important source of income for some countries who create limited runs of elaborate stamps designed mainly to be bought by stamp collectors. The stamps produced by these countries may exceed the postal needs of the countries, but may also feature attractive topical designs that many collectors would like to have in their stamp album."

I would say that they are pretty much the same, or I could say that philately is rather "advanced stamp collecting".
How many philatelists do YOU know that DO NOT collect ANY stamp?
I don't know anybody like that, and I know relatively a lot of people, all over the world.
This reminds me of an old joke:
"- What's the similarity between a testicle and a "workers' union"?
- They both participate, but don't get INTO it."
[The idea was that the workers' unions don't really get involved INTO real politics, which was then true at least somewhere, behind the Iron Curtain...]
Now, back to the ranch.
A philatelist that doesn't get involved at all into collecting ANY stamp must be a rarity.
It's like an EUNUCH that spends his time in a harem, but doesn't get involved. At all.
But the eunuch has no choice, because he is castrated.
The philatelist is able and free to collect anything he wants, anytime.
Then why the hell not?
Have some goodies for yourself!
